Job Opportunity: Activities Leader

SASS is looking for an enthusiastic person to join our team who has skills in organising, delivering and co-ordinating varied activities for asylum seekers and refugees. We are a small charity that provides Welcome, Welfare, Wellbeing and Empowerment to asylum seekers and refugees, with few staff and lots of volunteers. Many SASS volunteers are themselves asylum seekers and refugees.

The job is fixed term (renewable if funding is secured), 4 days per week, with regular Friday early evening and Saturday working.

Recruitment process

Your application must be received by 5pm on 3rd May 2024.

  • Your CV.
  • Names of 2 referees with their job titles, phone numbers and emails.
  • A written statement on up to 2 sides of A4, explaining what your priorities will be in the first 2 or 3 months, if you get the job (read the Job Description carefully).

About Swansea Bay Asylum Seekers Support Group

We are a volunteer-led registered charity, run and managed by our members, who include asylum seekers, refugees and other local people. We give a warm welcome to people seeking sanctuary in Swansea through our twice-weekly drop-ins, and offer practical support and educational and recreational opportunities.

We are seeking someone to help us

  • Build our capacity and sustainability by encouraging existing and new members to contribute to the organisation in different ways – be it through practical tasks or governance
  • Improve our existing services by mobilising additional voluntary help
  • Help us identify and prioritise opportunities for new volunteer-led work

The successful candidate will:

  • Understand the challenges faced by asylum seekers and refugees
  • Communicate effectively face to face and in writing
  • Encourage and support people in a wide range of voluntary roles
  • Work with us to develop new projects and put them into action
  • Work on your own initiative within guidance offered by the line manager and management committee
  • Be available for frequent work on Friday evenings (5.30-7.30) and for 2.5 hours each Saturday.

Ideally you will have experience of working alongside asylum seekers and refugees – or first-hand experience of seeking asylum. However we are interested in all applicants who have the commitment, skills and attitudes needed for work.

“Share Tawe Accommodation Development Worker.

  • 21 hours a week
  • 2 year post, funded by Lloyds Bank Foundation
  • Based in Swansea
  • Salary £21,000 per annum Pro Rata. Statutory pension contributions

We are looking for someone to co-ordinate and develop our work with destitute asylum seekers. S/he will:

  • Coordinate Share Tawe – a successful scheme which links asylum seekers who have been made destitute, with local volunteer households willing to offer accommodation.
  • Pilot and evaluate a “shared house” project for asylum seekers and refugees
  • Help people move on from destitution

The successful candidate will be:

  • A clear and sensitive communicator
  • A person of sound judgement and able to prioritise
  • Highly organised and with good written English and IT skills.

Ideally they will have experience of working alongside asylum seekers and refugees – or first-hand experience of seeking asylum.

However we are interested in all applicants who have the commitment, skills and attitudes needed for work.
