Adult Learning Wales (ALW)

Adult Learning Wales is an adult education movement, committed to widening participation, promoting active citizenship and skills development. SASS have courses taking place in September 2023 facilitated by ALW (register through SASS). Please see contact details below for other enquiries.

African Community Centre (ACC)

ACC offer English classes, food parcel referrals, mental health support, young people’s projects, other fun group activities, volunteering, and have an Asylum Seekers Community Transport scheme.

British Red Cross

The British Red Cross offer services to asylum seekers, refugees and those who are appeal rights exhausted. They can provide destitution support, including applications for Discretionary Assistance Fund, signposting to foodbanks, referrals to Housing Options for people with NRPF. There is cash based assistance to destitute asylum seekers and refugees with no other means of support available, following an assessment.

Circus Eruption

Circus Eruption are a free integrated youth charity in Swansea, using circus skills as a vehicle to challenge self-perceived and imposed limits, enabling people to realise and believe in their own potential and the potential of others. Circus Eruption regularly provide sessions for SASS.

Ethnic Minorities and Youth Support Team (EYST)

EYST provides vital support for asylum seekers and refugees in Swansea. Their Asylum Seeker & Refugee Advice Service offers appointment-based advice from the EYST offices in Swansea in half-hour slots every weekday from Monday to Friday, 10:00am-3:00pm. Arabic speakers and other languages are available on request. If you need support, please book an appointment via the EYST main line as all other numbers are now out of service. Their query email is still open, so please use that for general enquiries.

Friends and Neighbours (FAN) Group

The FAN Group have weekly meetings in Swansea, both online and ‘in-person’. These are a friendly and relaxed way for local people and those from around the world to meet, talk and listen to each other. Groups sit in a circle, talk about our daily lives, our ideas and experiences.

Oxfam Castle Street Bookshop

As the first Shop of Sanctuary in the UK, the Oxfam Bookshop on Castle Street welcomes many asylum seeker volunteers. They also have a shop on Union Street where volunteers are welcome.

Swansea City of Sanctuary (SCoS)

SCoS are a local organisation from the City of Sanctuary network, who aim to create a culture of welcome and inclusivity in Swansea. They are always looking for those with lived experience to volunteer or become part of their Management Committee to help make their vision a reality, and offer bus fares to people with lived experience to join in on their events.

Swansea Council for Voluntary Service (SCVS)
“A Better Welcome to Swansea” Project

The Better Welcome project provide mentoring for new people seeking asylum in Swansea. They match newly arrived people with mentors who will support them and help them access services, social groups, classes, information on transport, and other things that are helpful to know about life in Swansea! Their service is available Monday to Friday, 10:00am-5:00pm.

The CAE (Centre for African Entrepreneurship)

The CAE empowers people from diverse backgrounds to thrive, access opportunities and be
independent. They provide holistic support that helps individuals meet their basic needs and build a strong foundation for their future. The CAE offer one-to-one help for anyone starting their career journey in the UK, looking to progress, or facing difficulties at work. The Community Enterprise Hub (28 Oxford Street, Swansea, SA1 3AN) is open Monday to Friday, 09:30 am to 5:30 pm, with drop-in sessions every Thursday. Referrals can be made by individuals or partner organisations, and a member of the team will contact you to arrange an appointment.

Unity in Diversity (UiD)

UiD offer community drop-ins (similar to those with SASS) and have a Women’s Group. The following support is available:

  • English classes at beginner and pre-intermediate level.
  • Clothes, toys, house things: they can bring things to you.
  • Food: They can refer to food banks or bring some food to you, especially in the Manselton and Penlan areas.
  • Somebody to talk to, especially if you are on your own.
  • Advice or support.
  • Opportunity to volunteer and support other asylum seekers.

Welsh Refugee Council (WRC)

WRC offer support for newly granted refugees, helping with welfare benefits, housing, and asylum support applications. Calls will be triaged by one of the team and, if they are able to help, you will be called back by a caseworker. If an interpreter is required, they will do their best to have an interpreter on the phone. The number for their Swansea Office is below.
