Role Overview
SASS delivers its services in venues we do not own, meaning it is essential that spaces are set up properly for our drop-in activities and left exactly as we found them. The Setting-Up and Clearing Away team ensures that tables, chairs, and other equipment are arranged ready for use and that the venue is tidied and cleaned at the end of each session.
This is a vital role in keeping our drop-ins well-organised, welcoming, and respectful of the venues we use. Clear guidance is provided to ensure that everything is done properly.
Responsibilities
- Setting up seating, tables, and activity areas before the drop-in starts.
- Helping to arrange spaces for different activities (e.g., art activities, English lessons, discussion groups).
- Packing away chairs, tables, and equipment after the session.
- Ensuring the venue is clean and left as we found it (following venue guidelines).
- Assisting with waste disposal and any light cleaning tasks as required (following venue guidelines).
- Working as a team to make sure tasks are done efficiently.
Skills and Qualities
- Reliability and willingness to help with physical tasks.
- Ability to work as part of a team and follow instructions.
- Attention to detail to ensure everything is properly arranged and cleared.
- A commitment to respecting the venues we use.
Time Commitment
- Volunteers can help on a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly basis according to the team rota.
- Sessions require help before the drop-in starts and after it ends.
Support & Benefits
- Volunteers are provided with clear guidance on how the setup and clearing away should be done.
- Teamwork experience that can be useful for job applications.
- References and support letters available for volunteers who require them.
- A great way to get involved in the community and meet new people.
Volunteer Inductions
All new volunteers are invited to attend an induction session where they will learn about SASS, our mission, and key facts about the UK asylum system. The session also provides an overview of the different volunteer roles available, helping new volunteers find a role that best suits their skills and interests.
Volunteer Wellbeing & Feedback Sessions
To ensure volunteers feel supported and valued, we hold periodic wellbeing sessions where volunteers can discuss their experiences, provide feedback, and explore new opportunities within SASS. These sessions help us improve our work while creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all volunteers.
