SASS Volunteer Role – Drivers Team

Role Overview

The Drivers Team plays a crucial role in supporting asylum seekers and refugees by collecting and delivering donations and helping with transport needs. Drivers assist with picking up essential donations such as food, clothing, and household items, as well as providing transport to Home Office signing (reporting) appointments for those who may otherwise struggle to get there.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting and delivering donations (e.g., clothing, food, household items) from donors and drop-off points.
  • Transporting community members to Home Office reporting/signing appointments when needed.
  • Ensuring items are safely loaded, transported, and delivered to the appropriate location.
  • Working as part of the wider Donations Management Team to ensure smooth logistics.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and respect when transporting community members.
  • Following SASS policies on fair distribution and safeguarding when handling donations or assisting individuals.
  • Communicating any issues, schedule changes, or concerns with the team.

Skills and Qualities

  • A full and valid driving license (required).
  • Access to a reliable vehicle (preferred but not essential, as we may have access to shared transport).
  • A willingness to help with loading/unloading donations (ensuring safe lifting practices).
  • Friendly, patient, and understanding when assisting community members with transport needs.
  • Ability to work flexibly depending on the needs of the community and donation schedule.
  • A commitment to fairness and respect, ensuring all beneficiaries receive equal support.

Time Commitment

  • This role is flexible—volunteers can help regularly or on an as-needed basis depending on availability.
  • Transport for signing appointments is often needed on specific days, while donation pickups depend on supply and demand.

Support & Benefits

  • Fuel/travel expenses may be covered depending on funding and availability.
  • Volunteers will gain valuable experience in community support and logistics.
  • We provide references for volunteers who are asylum seekers or looking to develop their experience in the charity sector.
  • Volunteers will be part of a welcoming and supportive team, helping to make a direct difference in people’s lives.

Volunteer Inductions

All new volunteers are invited to attend an induction session where they will learn about SASS, our mission, and key facts about the UK asylum system. The session also provides an overview of the different volunteer roles available, helping new volunteers find a role that best suits their skills and interests.

Volunteer Wellbeing & Feedback Sessions

To ensure volunteers feel supported and valued, we hold periodic wellbeing sessions where volunteers can discuss their experiences, provide feedback, and explore new opportunities within SASS. These sessions help us improve our work while creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all volunteers.
