SASS Volunteer Role – Signposting Team

Role Overview

The Signposting Team helps community members access the support and services they need. Volunteers use the SASS directory of services on our website to provide accurate and up-to-date information about housing, legal advice, healthcare, education, and other essential support. This role is vital in ensuring that asylum seekers and refugees can navigate local services effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Listen to community members’ needs and direct them to appropriate services.
  • Use the SASS directory of services to provide relevant information.
  • Ensure that individuals understand how to access the services they need.
  • Work closely with other SASS teams to provide holistic support.
  • Identify gaps in available support and report them to the team.

Skills & Qualities

  • Good communication and listening skills.
  • Patience and empathy when assisting individuals with complex needs.
  • Ability to use the online directory and explain information clearly.
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and follow confidentiality guidelines.

Time Commitment

  • Flexible, with opportunities to assist during drop-in sessions.

Support & Training

  • Training is provided on using the directory and understanding common support needs.
  • Volunteers can develop valuable skills in community support, social work, and advocacy.

Volunteer Inductions

All new volunteers are invited to attend an induction session where they will learn about SASS, our mission, and key facts about the UK asylum system. The session also provides an overview of the different volunteer roles available, helping new volunteers find a role that best suits their skills and interests.

Volunteer Wellbeing & Feedback Sessions

To ensure volunteers feel supported and valued, we hold periodic wellbeing sessions where volunteers can discuss their experiences, provide feedback, and explore new opportunities within SASS. These sessions help us improve our work while creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all volunteers.
